The Fiji Islands is an archipelago of over three hundred tropical islands in the South Pacific. The islands lie on the same latitude as Tahiti and surround the 180th meridian timeline - where each new day dawns. The main island of Fiji is called Viti Levu (Fijian for 'Big Fiji'). 70% of Fiji's population resides on Viti Levu.
There are many resorts on this island, both large resort hotels like the Denarau Resort Hotels complex near the international airport and small upmarket boutique resorts like Vatulele on tiny islands just off the western coast. Australia lies due west of Fiji 4 hours away by plane and New Zealand is to the south 3 hours away. The overnight flight from the west coast of the United States to Fiji is approximately ten hours.
Fiji was a British Colony for 100 years, gaining independence in 1970. Fiji is a parliamentary democracy and a member of the British Commonwealth. Fiji has a multiracial population known for their relaxed and happy friendliness. English is the official language in Fiji but you will hear Fijian and Hindi spoken frequently as well as a variety of colorful South Pacific Island languages. The universal greeting in Fiji is "Bula" - the Fijian word for "Hello" and for "Happiness" and "Health"!
These are the "Happy Islands" where visitors never forget the warm welcome of the islanders. You will want to put down roots and stay in this "Bula" tropical culture.
